One of the most entertaining parts of being a family with two moms is when people try to “figure us out.”
Yesterday we stopped by my father’s house and he happened to be there with a guy who was buying some chain link he saw advertised on Craigslist. We pulled up and my father introduced Lillian as his granddaughter. Lauren and I kindly said hello, but then when we were leaving the fence-buying-guy tried to strike up a brief conversation.
“So… you’re his daugher?” the man asked Lauren, who had been carrying Lillian since we arrived.
“Nope, she is” Lauren said pointing to me.
“Oh… but, that’s his granddaugher?…” he said, perplexed.
“Yep” Lauren said.
And we got in the car. You could clearly see the look of total befuddlement on his face as we drove away.
This type of thing happens all the time. Either they are totally confused or people begin to pry to figure it out. Most of the time we laugh it off and think it is entertaining, because it usually comes from a kind place, but sometimes we are quick to correct people. We always let them know that we are both “the mother.” I am sure that this type of thing will happen more and more often as she gets older and when it does, we will be sure to let them know that we are both Lillian’s mommies. And if she is anything like Lauren and I were when we were little, I am sure it is only a matter of time before she corrects people and talks proudly about her two mommies 🙂
And just because I haven’t posted photos in a while, here’s a little gallery of photos of the now 10 month old Lillian — aka our army-crawling, bottomless pit, squealing, babbling, squeezable baby!
